Work in Victoria: Part
Two - Finding Work
If, despite reading my previous article,
you do plan to live and work in Victoria here are a few places
to start your job search. First of all, there is the government.
Most people in Victoria work either directly or indirectly for
the provincial, federal, or municipal governments. By far the
majority of those work for the provincial government. If your
interested in employment with them visit their job postings
site.
The federal government jobs are posted on the Public Service
Commission of Canada's Victoria
web site.
Employment pages for the Corporation of the District of Saanich
and The Corporation of the District of Oak
Bay. The others require a bit of digging but you can find
a convenient set of links to all of the local municipalities on
the CRD
site.
If you are looking for an academic environment, try the University
of Victoria, Camosun
College, or Royal
Roads University, listings. Always wanted to be a project
manager? Try the Centre
for Education Information. They're almost always looking for
PM types.
If hi-tech is your area of interest, try the Vancouver
Island Advanced Technology Center. The member companies (about
400) post their job openings on the site. If you don't find a
job of interest posted, try the membership directory. Each company
is described and there is a link to each company website. I often
find jobs are posted on the company websites.
If your looking for work in the health or medical fields in Victoria,
see what BCHealthJobs.com
has to offer.
The other significant employer in Victoria is the tourism and
hospitality industry. The majority of the jobs for that industry,
as well as construction, small business, and agricultural, can
be found at the federal governments Human
Resources Development Canada site. Go to the site and check
off the "Vancouver Island Area" box. If you only want
to see jobs in Victoria, type 'victoria' (without the quotes)
in the search criteria box.
Finally, if you are interested in contract work, check out the
BC Government Purchasing Commission's BC
Bid. This is where all the contracts, big and small, get posted.
There are often postings for contract work in Victoria that have
a year or more term, where they are only looking for one person.
